This FREE Health in Buildings Roundtable (HiBR) Forum brings together the Interdisciplinary health and sustainable buildings communities to discuss how big data, AI, metrics, resources, and emerging technologies for the built environment impact health and well-being. How sustainable building design operation, and technologies can improve health outcomes, and identify outstanding research issues including Climate Change and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that remain unanswered.

Xuemei Zhu

Texas A&M University
Associate Professor, Architecture

Dr. Xuemei Zhu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Health Systems & Design at Texas A&M University. She is also the Co-director of the research group “Design Research for Active Living.” Her scholarship investigates the impacts of built environment on public health, environmental sustainability, and social equity, with a specific focus on active living, healthy community, and evidence-based healthcare design. Her research is supported by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), with a total support of about $6.4 million. She has published extensively in the fields of environmental design and planning, environment-behavior research, and public health. Her teaching centers on the theme of environment-behavior relationships, and strengthens the link between environment-behavior research and design practice.

Senior Scientist, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity
Joel Kimmons, PhD is a senior nutrition scientist and epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity.  Dr Kimmons focuses on environmental and behavioral design approaches to creating healthy and sustainable places to live, work and play.  He leads partnerships that aim to create and operationalize healthy food service guidelines in community and institutional settings.  Dr Kimmons has recently collaborated with the US General Services Administration to create FitwelSM, a healthy building rating and certification program.  Joel received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in International Nutrition and Epidemiology.

At Delos, Dr. Whitney Austin Gray, HiBR Core Founding (Steering) Member, is responsible for the oversight of health research and the development of innovative design strategies and products that seek to improve human health and wellness through building design.
 
Prior to joining Delos, Dr. Gray served as the Health Research and Innovation Director for Cannon Design, a global healthcare design firm, where she oversaw the company’s primary and secondary research, prototyping and innovation platforms. During her tenure with Cannon Design, she delivered transformative projects to clients and worked to develop and promote new ideas that increased the impact of health research and innovation on the design industry. She holds dual appointments as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Georgetown School of Nursing & Health Studies, with research interests that include the development of innovative and sustainable design strategies, processes, and products that provide a safe and healing environment for patients and staff.
 
Dr. Gray’s efforts have been widely published, and she is an invited presenter at national and international conferences—often speaking on topics related to health centered design in healthcare environments. Dr. Gray co-founded the NIH Health in Buildings Roundtable, and supports health and design research through the AIA, ULI, and EDRA. She received her PhD from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and her BA in Public Health Studies from The Johns Hopkins University, and was the first public health professional to become LEED AP.

President

Joyce Lee, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is President of IndigoJLD providing green health, design, benchmarking and planning services for exemplary projects and communities. She is among a group of 350 LEED Fellows worldwide. Joyce is also on faculty at the University of Pennsylvania and directs building healthy places at the Urban Health Lab.

She has been an Architect Fellow at the National Leadership Academy for Public Health and one of the first LEED accredited professionals in New York City. Joyce served under Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg. She was the Chief Architect at the New York City OMB overseeing the survey of major city-owned buildings (over 200 million sqft) and waterfronts with the goals of enhancing long-term planning and identifying green design and development opportunities. During her tenure, the program grew over 25%. She was then the first Active Design Director, with a focus on design excellence and human health, in New York City. The Active Design Guidelines, a publication she co-authored, had won recognition from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as well as the Sustainable Building Industry Council. 

Joyce is the recipient of numerous awards including the Health and Human Services Good Neighbor Award, Platinum Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, the President's Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York State, and the Aga Khan Award from Harvard/MIT.

Trained in interior architecture/design/engineering, sustainable building research, and workplace strategies for over two decades, Young’s focus in research and practice resides in health/wellbeing - enhanced workplace and organizational outcomes, indoor environmental quality and occupant experiences, and innovative workplace strategic planning. As the creator of open source workplace analytics CAPTIW©: Workplace Innovation Performance and PROWELL©: Workplace Health & Wellbeing Performance, she has been pioneering evidence-based practice in workplace design and management to help organizations achieve enhanced workplace health /wellbeing/ performance. Young integrates her analytic research background into design/management strategies to continuously pursue her belief in sustainability, health & wellbeing, and workplace effectiveness.

She has published numerous journal/ industry articles and presented at many international/national conferences and events including TEDx Talk (Disengage to Engage), NEOCON, Healthcare Design, OECD, and Forbes. Recently, she has published a book chapter on Workplace Health and Its Impact on Human Capital, summarizing her approach to workplace health and wellbeing. Young’s “UCL Workplace Health and Wellbeing” research project, with experts in the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London, exemplifies her efforts to link the workplace environment to employee health and wellbeing as well as organizational outcomes in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. She currently serves on the advisory/editorial board of Active Design for Workplace Wellbeing, Leading for Wellbeing Consortium, the Journal of Indoor and Built Environment, and the Journal of Intelligent Buildings International.

Post Doc, Mechanical Engineering

Meng Kong is currently a Postdoc Fellow Researcher as well as the co-manager of Building Energy and Environmental System Laboratory (BEESL) at Syracuse University. He got his Ph.D. in 2017 and stay in Syracuse to continue his research. Since he joined BEESL in Syracuse, he has participated and led multiple types of research, supported by ASHRAE, U.S DOE, and some companies, on the indoor/outdoor environmental quality and building performance. His current studies are focused on the thermal comfort of the office workers and air quality in low-energy buildings. He is also working in a team for ASHRAE T.C. 5.10 Kitchen Ventilation to improve the communities’ knowledge on commercial kitchen air quality and emission control.

Linda Berg-Cross

Howard University
Professor of Psychology

Linda Berg-Cross is a Professor of Psychology at Howard University and board certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and Clinical Psychology.  She is especially interested in starting to examine individual differences in environmental vigilance includeing physical ambient factors, noise, and lighting. She is working with the HiBR Psychosocial, Physical and Greenspaces Workgroup.

Dr. Berg-Cross holds a Joint appointment with Department of Psychiatry, Howard University Hospital and was the Director of the Clinical Psychology Program at Howard University. She has over 32 years of clinical experience as a consultant, researcher, supervisor, educator, and therapist in the US and abroad, including being a Fulbright Senior Specialist at both the University of Warsaw, Poland  and Minho University, Braga, Portugal.  She earned both her MS and PH.D. at Columbia University, New York.

She has published 50 articles and four textbooks on health related research.
